Keeping children safe online is everyone's responsibility
The Internet is fast becoming an essential part of everyday life. The education of pupils in online safety is therefore an essential part of our school’s safeguarding provision. Children need the help and support of the school and their parents and carers to recognise and avoid online safety risks and to build their resilience.
Within school we filter and monitor all internet access through the school's network, provide guidance and advice to pupils (through our PHSE lessons, Crew Sessions and our Computing and eSafety curriculum) of the potential risks and dangers of accessing and using the internet.
The Internet has become an important part our lives, enabling research, communicating with friends and accessing information from around the world. Increasing provision of the Internet in and out of schools brings with it the need to ensure that children remain safe. Internet development is constantly evolving into ever more innovative areas with many websites enabling amazing creativity and interaction between peers. Unfortunately though, there are times when Internet use can have a negative effect on our children.
Information for parents and carers
We have curated a suite of resources, fact sheets and links here for our parents and carers. These have been selected based on the online safeguarding concerns and referrals in school which have affected our children.
We hope you will our resources useful. However, if you need help with supporting online safety at home, please contact us for help and advice. If you have a concern about online safety for a child, please speak to the Designated Safeguarding Lead, Chris Evans or one of the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead, Rob Whitehead. Kate Jacklin or Nancy Austwick.
We have rearranged the date for our Parenting in the Digital World parent session to Wednesday 9th July, 7.00pm.
As we head towards the summer and potentially, increased time for children using their devices, we are offering this session to our community to support our joint efforts in keeping our children safe. We know that many of the safeguarding issues we work with in school relate to online activity in an ever evolving virtual world.
Last year, we hosted this virtual session for our parents and carers, delivered by Richard from the Stay Safe Initiative. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and many parents and carers told us that they found the session enlightening and very useful in helping with practical strategies to help them monitor their child’s internet use and to set boundaries and protective functions. We have invited Richard to host another session and hope you will be able to attend.
